Celebrating midday Mass at Santa Maria della Pietà—just one of fifteen churches, chapels and oratories inside Vatican City—Father Michael Dominic raised the sacred host high in the air as he performed the Consecration. Acquitting himself in the rituals of the Mass gave him a stronger sense of self, of deeper connectedness to the faithful whom he served. And with all that was going on, he needed the service as much as the multitude sitting in the pews.

Extending the invitation to Communion to those attending—and even midday Masses at the Vatican were well patronized—Dominic dispensed the consecrated Eucharistic Sacrament to those who approached the Communion rail, some thirty souls at today’s service.

Giving his final blessing and dismissal, Dominic concluded the Mass and returned to the sacristy, changing into his street clothes to meet Hana for a late lunch across the street at Paisano Trattoria.
